Entire Career of Earnings Inadequate for UK Employees to Become Part of Most Affluent 10%, Study Finds

Per recent study, the median worker in the UK would need 52 years' worth of earnings to attain the net worth of the most affluent 10% in the country.

Widening Economic Disparity Over Time

The analysis analyzed wealth distribution statistics from the Covid pandemic period and discovered that in the pre-financial crisis era, it would have taken 38 years of typical employment income to enter the top 10th of the wealth distribution.

A research lead part of the study stated: "Economic disparities in Britain are presently so substantial that a typical full-time employee setting aside their entire income during their working years would remain unable to achieve the peak of the economic scale."

Assessing the Economic Gap

The analysis discovered that the difference between the net worth of the typical individual and someone in the top 10% was £1 million in 2006-08, but had expanded to 1.3 million pounds in real terms by the pandemic years.

The analyst further stated: "These disparities are doubly concerning as economic movement in Britain is restricted – individuals who begin life affluent tend to continue being rich, and conversely applies."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Even with the wealth gap growing in absolute terms, the share of total wealth in the UK possessed by the most affluent homes – known as "proportional economic disparity" – has been "largely unchanged since the 1980s era," per the research.

During this period, complete net worth in the UK rose substantially from three times the yearly economic output, to almost 7.5 times.

Contributors of Financial Divide

So-called "unearned" gains, by means of rising house prices and changes in retirement fund assessments, were the key contributors of the growing financial disparity over the past decade, as stated in the analysis.

These gains tended to accrue to senior citizens with real estate, the analysis reveals – intensifying the age-based economic gap.

Intergenerational Wealth Disparities

The typical financial disparity between individuals aged 30-34 and sixty-somethings grew by more than 100% in inflation-adjusted terms, from £135k in pre-financial crisis, to 310 thousand pounds.

Area-Based Disparities

There were also stark regional variations, with the average level of wealth in the pandemic period amounting to 290 thousand pounds in the SE of England, where real estate values have tended to rise rapidly, versus £110k in the northeastern region.

COVID Era Impact

Amid the health crisis, when millions of workers were protected by the government-supported job retention program, and Covid shutdowns limited opportunities for spending, the data shows numerous families were able to save, increasing their wealth.

Higher-income households achieved superior outcomes, nevertheless. "The average household in the lowest-income quintile saw their liquid savings increase by just £80 throughout the health crisis (2019-20 to 2021-22), broadly the same as the two years pre-pandemic. In contrast, the typical family in the wealthiest fifth saw their liquid savings increase by £4,200," the analysis concludes.
