Former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras Claims Varoufakis Was ‘Unsuitable’ for the role of Greece's Finance Minister During Financial Meltdown

Within his recently unveiled memoir, called Ithaki, the former premier Tsipras does not hold back as he revisits the turbulent era during Greece's economic turmoil.

A Controversial Choice

In Tsipras's version, Tsipras appointed the unorthodox economist Yanis Varoufakis as the finance minister primarily because of the latter's worldwide fame along with Varoufakis's “extremely attractive” skills when it came to communicator.

“In reality, he was, truthfully, more of a celebrity rather than an economic expert,” recalled Tsipras.

Conflicting Agendas

Tsipras suggests that Varoufakis possessed his own motives which included advancing Varoufakis's books as well as experimenting with his theories on the nation rather than truly fighting for its economic stability.

Tsipras wrote how those discussions to avoid bankruptcy were “not just a method to secure a better deal for the country. They were a test, a monumental chance to demonstrate the truth of Varoufakis's economic theories.”

High-Stakes Talks

Amid volatile discussions, Greece found itself dangerously on the brink of exiting the eurozone.

On the line lay both Greece's destiny but also those punishing cutbacks demanded in exchange for financial aid by international creditors.

Unsuccessful Alternatives

Attempts to secure funds elsewhere, such as a desperate plea to Russia to purchase Greek bonds, went unanswered.

Helping the indebted country would be tantamount to tossing cash in the trash-can, Putin reportedly told his Greek counterpart in Moscow.

Public Vote and Reversal

In July 2015, the punitive conditions were put to a public vote, an action that threw Europe into deeper crisis of identity.

Although the referendum was carried resoundingly by those against austerity, the prime minister was forced to ignore the result then negotiate a rescue deal with foreign lenders which proved to be more severe.

Breaking Point

The ex-PM claimed how he started questioning Varoufakis relatively soon.

“He was the face of negotiation, the man who drew publicity, who graced the front pages of magazines globally … it seemed he relished the spotlight.”

When the minister proposed a backup strategy that included establishing a secondary currency as well as distributing coupons to retirees, the leader knew it was the end questioning him: “Are you serious?”

Enduring Rebuke

In the book, Tsipras asserts how Varoufakis had proved himself to be “unsuitable for a deal demanding intricate and delicate management.”

Tsipras further claimed how his aggressive approach made him increasingly isolated with colleagues, put Greece at risk, while helped hawks who were advocating a Greek exit from the euro.

The account of events has provoked fury along with stunned disbelief among certain groups, whereas Varoufakis has so far maintained a conspicuous quiet regarding these claims.
