In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Discussions Taking Place
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
