Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge certain decisions made by the chair umpire, following the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
